I started my research by finding and looking at websites that contain information on recycling and finding what people thought of it.
The official description given by Waste aware Scotland, the leading governing campaign body in Scotland for improving environmental awareness calls recycling:
“Recycle is the third level of the Waste Hierarchy. It means using waste materials to manufacture other products of an identical or similar nature”.
Fortunately, with choosing recycling as the main subject area, I have chosen a subject that is very current and discussed regularly in the media. So there is no shortage of information, which I can use to gain ideas for the project.
Many people ask what the benefits of recycling are and that can be answered quite simply that there are 3 main reasons given to society for the need to recycle, these are the reasons given by waste aware Scotland, these include
- It saves the Earth’s natural resources.
- Saves energy and reduces the risk of climate change.
- Reduces the need for landfill sites.
The main websites that I have been looking at for helping my project include
Waste aware Scotland
Greenpeace
Friends of the earth
Dundee city council
I have also looked all the different types of product that can be recycled in this country, I have to say I was quite surprised by the amount of material that can be recycled in Britain and by doing this research I have found out something really interesting as well.
We all know of products that can be recycled in some way, but here is a list of all the items that can be recycled in this country:
Aerosols
Aluminium
Bikes
Books
Cans
Car batteries
Cardboard
Christmas cards
Construction and demolition waste
Cooking oil
Crockery
Engine oil
Flurscent tubes
Food and drink cartons
Frideges and freezers

It is an amazing list of items that appear, and it has made me think about how much waste I could actually recycle, that is one of the reasons I feel so strongly for the need to highlight recycling and to try and make it more accessible to a larger audience. |
