Primary research -
Surveying comic book readers

In order to determine patterns amongst female comic readers I was able to perform an online questionnaire and focus group.

Questionnaires were posted to online forums and art community websites such as deviantart to gain response from a specific audience involved in the creation and consumption of art.

The questions asked to users varied as I gained experience about how individuals would respond to the wording. I began by requesting information in the following format:

- Age
- Gender
- Level of experience with computers
- Level of experience with comic books, if you have any favourite comic book artists.
- What you believe interaction to be

After having two responses I decided to change the last question to specifically reflect the format of comic books and so it was changed to:

- What do you think an interactive comic should/could be like?

An additional question was added regarding the delivery preference of comics:

- Do you prefer digital comics or non-digital physical comic books?

Most of the responses to this question were in favour of printed comics "I guess the reason why people (and myself) like paper comics over digital ones is because they can actually hold them in their hand. Also, they would'nt have to wait for a screen to load to start reading. Plus, you can take paper comics with you anywhere; you can't do that with a digital comic, unless you save every single comic page on your laptop." Printed comics not only have advantages related to screen use but also being able to see an entire page layout at once, observing the progression of time through panels and the feel of the object.

Although I received questionnaires back from males I focused on analysing data acquired from females as the focus on my project was towards this group.

I have highlighted specific answers collected from respondents, but the raw data is also available.
