At the end of Semester One I determined the best way for the project
to succeed was to develop a suitable story that the audience could
be engaged with.
I created three story concepts with the target audience in mind, from
which I would choose one to take forwards and develop. All three stories
were based around narratives where traditionally males held positions
of power. For each story I created some concept artwork and a synopsis,
they are as follows:
Hero's Quest - Arnora and the Troll Hammer

Based around the traditional hero's quest story, such as Jason and the
Argonauts Arnora's tale is set in a Norse fantasy world. The purpose
of the story was to highlight how women could be facilitators in action
orientated stories.
Superhero - Ugly Girl

Ugly Girl is a contemporary superhero story creating an unconventional
hero, anda narrative that confronts concepts of beauty and self-respect.
Fairy Tale - Demon Slayer/The Lost Princess of Cellador

Demon Slayer is a reversal on fairy tale stories by making the princess
the hero of the story who saves the day.
From this selection I performed an evaluation to determine which story
was most suitable for carrying forward in the process. Criteria for
the evaluation were; appeal to audience, adaptation into the appropriate
(popup comic book) format and strong initial story construction.
From the selection created I opted for the Demon Slayer story. I felt
that it had the strongest story; characters were interesting and dynamic
with their changing roles and views. Also it most suited adaptation
to popup format with action sequences that would allow for dynamic mechanism
arrangements.
