As this is a research project there was no goal to find answers or solutions to any problem. However, I have always intended to interpret the findings and portray these visually to try and communicate to other people what I have learned. From the onset my intention was to allow an audience to relate more easily to the material by presenting it as an interactive piece of art.
My initial idea was to present the actual returned items (cultural probes & experiments), however this has developed to analysing this information and presenting it in a more polished form.
Examining the collected data made me realise that many of the fears that people revealed were interlinked and stemmed from a collective mindset. I wanted to show this connection between them and so created a mind map showing the relationships between them. This was still a collection of words, which I wanted to move away from by using a strong image that reflected the project as a whole.
This came around by considering the most obvious element of the project- the participants. Throughout I wanted everyone who took part to be anonymous and this was an important point to portray. I drew the mind map onto an arm so that the identity of the person was concealed but there was still a representation of a person. I think this image works well. It is also a good metaphor for revealing fears- as words on the human body.To develop this further I attempted to relate specific fears to certain areas of the body (head, hands) and photographed this.
I intend to use this imagery as a final representation of the collected research. My plan is to continue developing this idea and create an interactive representation. I would like the final piece of work to convey the connections between fears and allow an audience to relate to this.
